316i Fehlzündung (English)

  • Hi guys, my name is Marko and I don't speak German, sorry. But I have a problem with my BMW and I registered on this forum to ask for help.

My vehicle is a BMW 316i 10/2003 with 120,000km on it and I am the second owner. I bought this vehicle in Germany and since then I have a misfire problem that no one can find.

Car is only misfiring on low RPM. From 1,200 RPM to 2,000 RPM (When it's cold it misfires to 3,000 RPM). It's shaking on idle a little bit. After the RPMs go above 2,000 it's not misfiring.

    Any help is appreciated

    Danke :D

  • Hi there an welcome to our community!

Which components are already replaced and which are checked?

Maybe there is a problem with one ore more of the ignition coils...

Do youve checked the fault memory?

  • Well the vehicle previously was burning oil so a general rebuild has been done (It doesn't burn any oil now):

    *Head gasket
    *Piston Rings
    *Valve Stem Seals
    *Crankcase gasket
    *Crankshaft Bearing
    *Spark plugs
*CCV (Without hoses and without valve)
    *Crankcase position sensor

    All OEM from Germany

However my mechanic tried with a new MAF he told me it's fixed but when he took it for a test drive it began to misfire again.

I only have PA soft and it's giving me 3 errors:
    *278E Misfire Detected, Checksum Failure
    *Misfire detected on Cyl. 4
    *Misfire detected on Cyl. 2

Interesting thing is if I disconnect any sensor like the MAF and MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) the misfire is completely gone, but then the car doesn't start in the mornings and it's really slow.

Car was taken to a diagnostics but here in my country the only thing they have is DIS and it says that there are no fault codes and Cyl. 4 isn't running right/stable.

I left the car for checking but I have no idea what they checked, they just told me they have no idea what the problem is, so I am guessing they checked the ignition coils but I am not sure about that. There is no official BMW dealer here they shutdown last year so I am left with taking the car to private garages.

I am getting INPA cable and software this month so I will post live data. I hope this forum will be able to help me find my problem with my car, here mechanics know how to fix only 320d :D

  • Hi,

there are many possible erros to check.

First of all you should try the simplest things.

Is it possible that the engine get false air? E.G. the oil refill shutter, if its not tight enough it can suck false air, which can cause symptoms like yours.

Next thing would be to change the ignition coils which each other and read out the error reports again. If the error changes to another zylinder, it is probably one or more of the ignition coils.

How many miles the car has run?

  • I am going to change the ignition coils tomorrow all I don't think they will cost more than 100EUR for Bosch.
According to last diagnostics the MAF is getting correct readings.

I will check for vacuum leaks as the engine is making a whining noise when cold. Same noise like a belt noise but much quieter.

The Vehicle has 127,000 km. I checked with TUV Hessen when I was buying the car they gave me documents of every 2nd year registration so I am sure they are real.

  • It is not usefull to change any parts befor you have a correct diagnostic.
Missfireing at low RPMs can also result from a problem with the Valvtronic.
Before you buy new coils, you should how Exodus explained it, by changeing,
to coils from one zylinder to another, an then checking by Software.

  • Ok hmm, can you tell me which software is able to diagnose this problem? PA Soft isn't giving any good information. Says there are no error codes. However I have noticed that on the Valvetronic page on PA Soft it says "No Data" while for everything else it says "No Error Codes". I am getting INPA this week and I will record a video with all live data.

    Regards :)

  • Well INPA didn't show any faults, everything looked operational, no error codes.
All Cyl. were working good around -1 to 1, when I rev it all values are 0 when I let go of the gas they return to -1 to 1 except the Cyl.1 was going to 7-6 and returning slowly to 1

However when I scanned with PA Soft, everything was "No Error Codes" but the Valvetronic tab had "No Data" which is weird 0_o. And I am beginning to think that the vavletronic motor or sensor is faulty.

Just an update, I will take the car to a mechanic 40km away this week :).

    Regards

  • Ok an update to those that are following the thread.

I did take it to a trusty mechanic in my area and they looked at it and diagnosed it with DIS.
Same error code as before 274E Misfire Checksum Error
It's a little bit weird for me, I study computers and Checksum Error or Syntax Error is usually RAM/Computer problems.

According to their diagnostics the outlet, inlet and chain are probably not calibrated or chain has skipped a tooth.

They told me they will adjust the No.4 and No.5 Adjustment unit including the chain and told me to pray that they are not broken cuz they will cost over 300EUR each
